Taxation Information

Property taxes make up 64% of the City’s revenue sources, and go towards the operating budget.

The operating budget supports the daily programs and services the City provides to support our community and make it a great place to live, work and play. This includes everything from snow removal to transit to recreational facilities.

Each year, Council sets the Mill rates (tax rates) in late April or early May to meet our community’s needs.

A portion of the property tax payment is also a collection on behalf of the Government of Alberta for schools taxes.

View our 2024 Tax Brochure below for a full overview of where your tax dollars went the past taxation year.

Tax Notices are typically mailed in late May every year. Each registered property owner is sent a copy of the tax notice regardless of how the taxes are being paid.

Payment of property taxes is due on the last business day of June each year but can be made at any time during the year. For information on how to pay your property taxes, visit the Tax Payment Information page or the Tax Installment Payment Plan page for details on how to set up a monthly payment option.

Penalties will be applied to unpaid taxes in the current year and prior years.

Frequently Asked Questions How do I get the seniors benefit on property tax?

To receive the Seniors’ Benefit on property tax you need to contact Alberta Seniors and Community Supports. Their toll-free number is 1-800-642-3853.

Why do I have to pay taxes for the part of the year that I didn't own the property?

When a property is purchased the lawyers office will handle the adjustment for the property taxes. In the first half of the tax year, the lawyers will typically issue a credit to the purchaser for the taxes for the portion of the year that they have not owned the home. By the lawyers issuing this credit it makes the purchaser responsible to pay the City of Grande Prairie for the full years taxes. The credit issued is typically taken off of the fees paid to the lawyer for their services.

What if I have a credit balance on my tax account?

You can either leave the credit on the tax account to be applied to next year's levy, OR you can request a refund by emailing taxinfo@cityofgp.com or by filling out a Request for Refund form.

How do I appeal my taxes?

Taxes cannot be appealed. Property owners can appeal their assessed value. If you would like more details on filing an assessment complaint please visit Alberta Municipal Affairs for details.

What is a legal description of a property?

The legal description of a property is the Lot, Block, and Plan number (e.g. Plan 952 2345, Block 2, Lot 15).

Why can't I get the name of who owns a property?

The City of Grande Prairie is given the names of property owners for tax billing purposes only. We cannot give out ownership information to the general public. People wanting to find out who owns a property can go to one of the registry offices in town and request a copy of the title.
